Angkor Wat is the largest and most well preserved of all the temples of Angkor. It's also the largest religious structure in the world. The guide book said that it can be a good idea to save it for last so that the other temples don't pale in comparison. This is good advice but we also decided to visit this temple last because it's the one most ridden with tourists. The idea of being crammed in with hundreds of other people on a hot humid day, all oohing and aahing over the same bas-reliefs wasn't so appealing. But of course you can't come to Cambodia without seeing it and it doesn't fail to impress. It's baffling, impressive, and awe-inspiring that anyone could build such a huge and beautiful structure, let alone do it a thousand years ago with out the benefit of cranes, bull dozers, and other heavy machinery. I have to wonder if we could duplicate the artistry and grandeur of this place with our modern technology.
